Hua Luogeng: Joining the Party at the Age of 70 with No Regrets

华罗庚是蜚声中外的数学家。他1910年11月出生于江苏省金坛县，1936年前往英国剑桥大学工作，1946年赴美国普林斯顿高等研究所担任研究员。新中国成立后不久，他毅然决定放弃普林斯顿高等研究员及伊利诺大学终身教授的优厚待遇，回到祖国。

Hua Luogeng, born in November 1910 in Jintan county, Zhejiang province, is a distinguished mathematician in China and abroad. He went to work in the University of Cambridge since 1936 and ten years later, he became a research fellow in the Institute of Advanced Study in Princeton University. Shortly after the founding of the People’s Republic of China, he resolutely decided to quit his senior research fellowship at Princeton and tenure-track professorship at the University of Illinois to return to the homeland.

华罗庚对成为共产党员很是向往，回国后，他一直有争取早日入党的愿望。1958年6月，他在中国科学院数学研究所全体员工大会上表示，要“坚决和党一条心”，立志以共产党员的标准要求自己，争取加入伟大的中国共产党，做一名无产阶级先锋战士。这是他第一次表态要加入中国共产党。

After his returning to China, Hua Luogeng was keen on becoming a member of the Communist Party of China (CPC) and made persistent efforts to join the Party. At the general meeting of the Institute of Mathematics of Chinese Academy of Sciences held in June 1958, Hua Luogeng pledged his loyalty to the Party, and asserted firmly that he would strive hard to meet the standards of a CPC member and join the great party. He wished to become a vanguard of the proletariat. This was the first time he expressed his intention to join the Party.

1963年，华罗庚向中国科学院数学研究所党组织递交了第一份入党申请书，然而，这一积极请求遭到了一些人的否定。1964年，已调任中国科技大学副校长兼应用数学系主任的华罗庚，向中国科技大学党组织递交了第二份入党申请书，再次提出入党申请。可是，这两次请求都石沉大海。

In 1963, Hua Luogeng sent in his first application for party membership to the party organization of the Institute of Mathematics of Chinese Academy of Sciences. However, his enthusiastic application was turned down. One year later, when he was appointed as the vice president and dean of Applied Mathematics of University of Science and Technology of China, he submitted the second application to the party organization. Unfortunately, both requests went unanswered.

尽管历经挫折，华罗庚入党的信念却坚定不移。1979年3月，他又一次向党组织提出申请。他在申请书中写道：“决心下定，活一天就为党工作一天，活一小时就为党工作一小时。对党、对人民、对祖国起些微薄的作用。”这次申请，终于有了结果。6月13日，华罗庚实现了他21年的夙愿，被吸收加入中国共产党。这一年，他已经70岁。

However, setbacks never weakened Hua’s commitment to joining the Party. In March 1979, he made the third application where he wrote, “I have made up my mind to work for the Party day and night until the end of my life. I am willing to make even the slightest contribution to the Party, the people and the homeland”. Finally, his application was granted. On 13 June, Huang Luogeng realized his long-cherished wish of 21 years and was accepted as a CPC member. That year, he was 70 years old.
