Yuan Longping: “China’s contribution” from a Grain of Rice

1953年，从西南农学院遗传育种专业毕业后，袁隆平被分配到湖南安江农校工作。

In 1953, after graduating from the Southwest Agricultural College majoring in genetics and breeding, Yuan Longping was assigned to work in Hunan Anjiang Agricultural Institute.

“作为新中国培育出来的第一代学农大学生，我下定决心要解决粮食增产问题，不让老百姓挨饿。”

"As the first generation of agricultural college students cultivated by New China, I am determined to solve the problem of increasing grain production and not let the people go hungry."

1956年，袁隆平带着学生们开始了农学实验。几年时间，袁隆平发现水稻中有一些杂交组合有优势，并认定这是提高水稻产量的重要途径。

In 1956, Yuan Longping led the students to conduct agronomy experiments. In a few years, Yuan Longping discovered that some hybrid combinations in rice owned advantages and determined that this was an important way to increase rice yield.

袁隆平著于1985年的《杂交水稻简明教程》，经联合国粮农组织出版后，发行到40多个国家，成为全世界杂交水稻研究和生产的指导用书。

Concise Course of Hybrid Rice written by Yuan Longping in 1985 was published by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and distributed to more than 40 countries, becoming a guide book for hybrid rice research and production around the world.

因为“为保障世界粮食安全和解除贫困展示了广阔前景”，并“致力于将杂交水稻技术传授并应用到包括美国在内的世界几十个国家”，2004年，袁隆平获得了世界粮食奖。

Because "shows broad prospects for ensuring world food security and alleviating poverty" and "committed to imparting and applying hybrid rice technology to dozens of countries in the world, including the United States," Yuan Longping won the World Food Award in 2004.

2021年5月22日“杂交水稻之父”、中国工程院院士、“共和国勋章”获得者袁隆平在湖南长沙逝世，享年91岁。

On May 22, 2021, Yuan Longping, "Father of Hybrid Rice", academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, and winner of the "Medal of the Republic" passed away in Changsha, Hunan at the age of 91.
